New Shikara Ride Service Enhances Tourist Experience in Dal Lake

Tourists visiting the iconic Dal Lake in Srinagar now have an easier and more reliable way to explore its tranquil beauty, thanks to the launch of India’s first water transport service – Uber Shikara. This service combines modern technology with the traditional charm of the region, offering visitors the convenience of booking shikara rides through the popular Uber app.

A Step Towards Modernizing Traditional Shikara Rides

The Uber Shikara service was inaugurated at Nehru Park, a popular island hub on Dal Lake. Initially, seven locally-owned shikaras are part of the service, with plans for expansion based on tourist demand. The service offers a seamless experience by enabling tourists to pre-book rides, removing the need for haggling over prices – a common concern among visitors. The pricing structure follows government-regulated rates, ensuring transparency and fairness.

Supporting Local Shikara Operators

A major benefit of the new service is that it ensures that local shikara operators receive the entire fare without any commission cuts. This direct financial support boosts the livelihoods of these operators, who depend on the tourism industry. Wali Mohammed Bhat, President of the Shikarawala Association, emphasized, “This service standardizes pricing and provides a reliable booking platform, benefiting both tourists and shikara riders.”

Tourists Praise the Convenience and Reliability

Tourists have expressed their appreciation for the service, highlighting the ease and reliability that pre-booking brings to their travel plans. The service accommodates up to four passengers per shikara, making it suitable for small groups and families. The rides are available daily from 10 am to 5 pm, with bookings open between 12 hours to 15 days in advance. This flexibility ensures that both spontaneous adventurers and those with well-planned itineraries can enjoy the scenic views of Dal Lake.

Expanding the Service and Boosting Local Business

The Uber Shikara initiative is expected to attract more participation from the 4,000 shikara operators who operate on Dal Lake, with more locals embracing the convenience of online reservations. This service not only enhances the tourist experience but also supports the local economy by creating a standardized, efficient, and transparent business model.

With Uber Shikara, tourists can now enjoy the picturesque beauty of Dal Lake in a more modern, hassle-free manner while helping preserve the livelihoods of local operators.
