Meet India’s ChatGPT Rival: Hanooman GPT

India now boasts its own indigenous alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, named Hanooman GPT. Developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in collaboration with Seetha Mahalakshmi Healthcare (SML), Hanooman GPT is an open-source Indic language model series.

Key Features of Hanooman GPT

  • Name Origin: The name ‘Hanooman’ is inspired by the Hindu deity Hanuman, symbolizing strength and dedication to public good.
  • Parameters and Languages: The model has 7 billion parameters and supports 7 Indian languages, with basic assistance in over 90 languages.
  • Open-Source Commitment: Unlike ChatGPT, Hanooman GPT will be open-source, as committed by SML founder Vishnu Vardhan.
  • Support and Collaboration: Major Indian firms like Reliance Jio support the model. Several Indian states, including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana, have shown interest in collaborating on this project.
  • Infrastructure: It leverages India’s planned 10,000 GPU AI supercomputer under the National AI Mission to enhance its capabilities over time.

Vision and Usage

Vishnu Vardhan, the founder of SML, emphasizes that Hanooman GPT is focused on specific use cases rather than trying to emulate ChatGPT’s “know-it-all” approach. The goal is to provide powerful AI capabilities tailored to India’s unique linguistic and cultural context.

How to Use Hanooman GPT:

  1. Search for “Hanooman” on any web browser.
  2. Login Process: Access the website, choose to log in with your mobile number or Gmail account, and enter the required credentials.
  3. Utilize Features: After logging in, use Hanooman GPT for various tasks like generating text and answering questions.

Comparison: Hanooman GPT vs. Ola’s Krutrim

  • Response Quality: Hanooman GPT offers concise and relevant responses but struggles with maintaining context in longer conversations. Krutrim often fails to respond accurately and hallucinates.
  • Knowledge Cutoff: Hanooman GPT’s knowledge is up-to-date until April 2022, while Krutrim’s is up-to-date until September 2021.
  • Language Capabilities: Both support multiple Indian languages, but Hanooman GPT plans to cover all 22 scheduled languages.
  • Open-Source Nature: Hanooman GPT will be open-source, while Krutrim remains closed-source.

Conclusion

Hanooman GPT symbolizes India’s ambition to lead in AI development, focusing on open access and customization to meet unique local requirements. Its progress will be closely monitored as an ethical and open-source alternative to commercial AI models, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of conversational AI in India.
