President of India

Salary:
In 2018, the salary of the President of India was significantly revised. The former Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, announced the hike in his budget speech, raising the President’s salary from ₹1.50 lakh per month to ₹5 lakh per month. The last revision before this had been effective from January 2006.

Perks:

  • Travel: The President can travel anywhere in the country free of cost via air, rail, or steamer, and is allowed to bring one person along at no additional expense.
  • Medical Services: The President receives medical services and attendance free of charge.
  • Residence: A furnished, rent-free home is provided, along with two free landlines (one for internet connectivity), a mobile phone, and five personal staff members. The maintenance of the home is also covered.
  • Spouse Benefits: In case the President dies while in office, the spouse is entitled to a family pension at 50% of the pension admissible to the retiring President for the rest of their life. The spouse will also receive free medical services for life.

Vice President of India

Salary:
Alongside the President’s salary hike, the Vice President’s salary was also increased in the same budget speech by Mr. Jaitley, from ₹1.25 lakh to ₹4 lakh per month.

Perks:

  • Accommodation and Security: The Vice President receives free accommodation and personal security.
  • Medical Care: Medical services are provided free of charge.
  • Travel: Free travel via train and air is provided.
  • Communication Services: A landline connection and mobile phone service are included.
  • Staff: Upon retirement, the Vice President is entitled to secretarial staff, including a Private Secretary, an Additional Private Secretary, a Personal Assistant, and two Peons, with the actual charges for maintaining such staff covered.

Prime Minister of India

Salary:
The Prime Minister of India receives a reported salary of ₹1.66 lakh per month.

Perks:

  • Security: The Prime Minister is provided with a Personal staff Special Protection Group (SPG) responsible for their security.
  • Travel: An exclusive aircraft, Air India One, is available for the Prime Minister’s official visits.
  • Residence: The Prime Minister resides at the official residence located at 7, Race Course Road.
