Fauja Singh, fondly known as the “Turbaned Tornado”, was not just a marathon runner — he was an icon of resilience, determination, and the human spirit. Born on April 1, 1911, in the village of Beas Pind, Punjab, Singh became an international inspiration by running marathons well past the age of 100. His story shattered stereotypes about aging and showed the world that limits exist only in the mind.
Early Life
Fauja Singh’s early years were marked by physical weakness and delayed development. He could barely walk until he was five years old due to weak limbs. However, with age came strength, and Fauja grew into a hardworking farmer. He moved to London later in life, following the loss of his wife and son, where his journey as a professional runner began — remarkably at the age of 89.
The Late Bloomer Who Shocked the World
What makes Fauja Singh’s story extraordinary is that he began his athletic journey when most people are long retired. He ran his first marathon in London in the year 2000 at the age of 89. Over the next decade, he completed marathons in cities like Toronto, New York, and Hong Kong, often clocking times that amazed much younger competitors.
His most historic moment came in 2011, when at the age of 100, he completed the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 8 hours and 11 minutes — becoming the first centenarian to do so. Although the Guinness World Records could not officially recognize the record due to lack of a birth certificate, the world knew that a legend had been born.
Inspiration Beyond the Track
Fauja Singh wasn’t just a sportsman; he was a symbol of hope. A vegetarian, teetotaler, and deeply spiritual man, Singh attributed his longevity and fitness to a simple lifestyle, a positive mindset, and regular walking and running. He also became a brand ambassador for fitness and was featured in Adidas campaigns alongside famous athletes like David Beckham.
He used his fame to promote charitable causes, especially those related to children, health, and Sikh welfare. Despite the international attention, Singh remained humble, grounded in his values and faith.
Retirement and Legacy
Fauja Singh officially retired from competitive running in 2013 after completing a 10K race in Hong Kong at the age of 101. However, he continued to walk regularly and participate in non-competitive events. His autobiography and numerous documentaries captured his journey and spirit for generations to come.
Tragic End
In July 2025, Fauja Singh passed away after being struck in a hit-and-run accident on the Jalandhar-Pathankot Highway. He was reportedly 114 years old. His death sent shockwaves across the world, with tributes pouring in from athletes, leaders, and admirers alike. Punjab Police later arrested the NRI driver involved in the accident.
Fauja Singh’s life was a powerful message: age is no barrier to achievement. Through his strength, humility, and unwavering spirit, he redefined what it means to grow old. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire runners, dreamers, and believers all over the world.
Fauja Singh didn’t just run marathons — he ran into history.
