🪔 Why Modak Is Special During Ganesh Chaturthi

Devotees traditionally offer modaks to Lord Ganesha during Ganesh Chaturthi. The sweet has a soft rice-flour covering and a sweet filling made mainly with coconut and jaggery. In Maharashtra, Ukadiche Modak remains a popular festive preparation.

Making modaks at home also allows families to prepare the prasad together and enjoy a traditional recipe during the festival.

🥥 Ingredients You Need

For the Modak Covering

  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon ghee
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon oil or ghee for greasing

For the Sweet Filling

  • 1 cup freshly grated coconut
  • ¾ cup grated jaggery
  • ½ teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 1 teaspoon ghee
  • A small pinch of nutmeg powder, optional
  • Chopped dry fruits, optional

🍯 Prepare the Coconut-Jaggery Filling

  1. Heat a pan on medium flame and add the grated coconut.
  2. Add the grated jaggery and mix both ingredients well.
  3. Cook the mixture on low to medium heat until the jaggery melts.
  4. Continue stirring until the mixture becomes slightly thick.
  5. Add cardamom powder and optional nutmeg powder.
  6. Turn off the flame and allow the filling to cool completely.

Tip: Do not overcook the filling. Excessive cooking can make it hard and dry after the modaks cool down.

🌾 Prepare the Rice-Flour Dough

  1. Pour water into a saucepan and bring it to a boil.
  2. Add salt and ghee.
  3. Reduce the flame and gradually add the rice flour.
  4. Stir continuously to prevent lumps from forming.
  5. Cover the pan and cook the mixture for a few minutes.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a plate or bowl while it remains warm.
  7. Knead it carefully into a smooth and soft dough.

Keep the dough covered with a damp cloth so that it does not dry out.

🙌 Shape the Modaks

Take a small portion of the warm dough and roll it into a smooth ball. Flatten it gently with your fingers and create a thin, round layer.

Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery filling in the centre. Bring the edges together and create small pleats around the filling. Carefully bring the pleats towards the top and seal the modak.

Repeat the process with the remaining dough and filling.

♨️ Steam the Modaks

Place the prepared modaks in a greased steamer plate. Leave some space between each modak so that steam can circulate properly.

Steam them for around 10–15 minutes until the outer covering looks slightly glossy and cooked. Remove them carefully and let them rest for a few minutes.

Brush a little ghee over the warm modaks before serving.

✨ Tips for Soft and Perfect Modaks

  • Use fine rice flour for a smooth outer covering.
  • Keep the dough warm and covered while shaping the modaks.
  • Do not make the outer layer too thick.
  • Cool the filling before placing it inside the dough.
  • Avoid adding too much filling because it can make the modak difficult to seal.
  • Grease your hands lightly while shaping the modaks.
  • Steam the modaks properly without overcooking them.

🙏 Serve Fresh Modaks as Prasad

Serve the warm modaks with a little ghee and offer them as prasad during Ganesh Chaturthi. Their combination of soft rice flour, coconut, jaggery and cardamom creates a classic festive flavour.

Homemade Ukadiche Modaks do not require complicated ingredients or advanced cooking skills. With the right dough consistency and a well-prepared filling, you can easily make delicious modaks at home and add a traditional touch to your Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 celebrations.
