Greece Issues Tsunami Alert After Magnitude 6 Quake

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Crete, Greece, prompting a tsunami assessment for the country, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences.

According to the EMSC, a tsunami threat is currently being assessed. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre explained, “Tsunamis can be classified as local (under 100 km), regional (under 1,000 km), or distant (over 1,000 km) based on the distance between the earthquake and the coastline.”

As per the Institute of Geodynamics in Greece. the earthquake was of magnitude 6.1. Whereas, ESMC stated that the magnitude of the earthquake was recorded to be at 6.3.

Multiple Earthquakes Rattle Greece

Last week. Greece experienced a similar warning after a series of strong earthquakes struck of its southern coast. On May 13, 2025, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck near the island of Kasos, prompting a tsunami warning for southern coastal areas.

However, as per Greece’s emergency services, the magnitude of the earthquake stood at 5.9.

The earthquake’s strength caused tremors to be felt in neighboring countries such as Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, and Israel.

Authorities advised residents and tourists to move away from the coasts due to the chances of a possible tsunami following this earthquake.

Furthermore, fault lines run through Greece, and earthquakes often strike the country.

Between January 26 and February 13, the University of Athens seismology laboratory recorded over 18,400 quakes. These earthquakes occurred off islands in the Cyclades island group of Greece.
